1. What Glucogaze is
Glucogaze is a consumer display project. It takes glucose data that already exists in a third-party continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) service you have chosen and connected, and it presents that data on a small always-on screen and on this website.
It is intended for information and convenience only. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, mitigate or prevent any disease or condition, and it is not intended to be used as the basis for any clinical or treatment decision.
2. It is not a medical device
Glucogaze is not a medical device. It has not been assessed, certified, approved or registered by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), by any UK Approved Body or EU Notified Body, by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), or by any other regulator anywhere in the world. None of its screens, alerts or statistics have been clinically validated.
Your CGM sensor, reader, pump and their official apps are regulated medical devices. Glucogaze is not a replacement for any of them, nor for the display, alarms or data those devices and apps provide. Treat Glucogaze as a secondary, unregulated view of data whose authoritative source lies elsewhere.
3. Never make treatment decisions from Glucogaze
Do not use anything displayed by Glucogaze to make a medical or treatment decision. That includes — without limitation — dosing or adjusting insulin or any other medication, deciding whether to eat or to treat a hypo, deciding whether to drive, and deciding whether to seek or delay medical help.
Before you act on a glucose number, confirm it using your approved blood glucose meter, your official CGM app or reader, or another method your clinician has recommended. If what Glucogaze shows disagrees with how you feel, believe how you feel and test.
4. Alerts, colours and sounds are not alarms
Glucogaze can change colour, raise an in-app notification, or make a sound when a reading crosses a threshold you have set. These are conveniences. They are delivered on a best-effort basis over consumer internet connections and unofficial data interfaces, and they can be delayed, duplicated, wrong, or absent altogether.
A failure is usually silent: if a screen loses Wi-Fi, if a source login expires, or if a provider blocks our requests, the display simply stops changing. It does not announce that it has stopped. You must not use the absence of an alert as evidence that glucose is in range.
The alarms built into your CGM system exist for safety and are regulated for that purpose. Keep them enabled and correctly configured. Do not switch them off or turn them down because Glucogaze is running.
5. The data comes from third parties we do not control
Glucogaze reads data through integration methods provided by, or reverse-engineered from, third-party services — including services such as FreeStyle LibreLink Up and Nightscout. Those integrations are not provided, endorsed, supported or controlled by the CGM manufacturers or by the maintainers of those services.
We make reasonable efforts to keep the connections working, but we do not control those systems and cannot guarantee that data will be available, current, complete or accurate. Providers may change, restrict, rate-limit or withdraw access at any time and without notice, and any such change may reduce, interrupt or permanently end Glucogaze’s ability to show your data. This is expected behaviour for an unofficial integration, not a defect.
6. Delay, gaps and error are normal
Information displayed by Glucogaze may be delayed, incomplete or unavailable because of connectivity problems, provider outages, sensor warm-up periods, rate limiting, expired credentials, power cuts or changes made by third-party platforms. Values may also be rounded or converted between mmol/L and mg/dL for display. Accordingly Glucogaze must not be relied upon for real-time monitoring or for any time-critical or safety-critical decision.
7. This is a DIY project and you build it at your own risk
Glucogaze is a do-it-yourself project. We do not sell, supply, distribute or import hardware. You choose and buy your own device from a third-party seller, you install our firmware on it yourself, and you site and power it yourself. Everything you do to that hardware, you do at your own risk.
- Flashing third-party firmware can permanently disable a device and will usually void any manufacturer warranty and any right of return you had against the seller.
- We have no relationship with the manufacturers or sellers of any device, and we make no representation about a device’s quality, safety, electrical compliance or fitness for any purpose.
- Lithium-ion cells can overheat, vent or ignite if damaged, short-circuited, over-charged or wired incorrectly. Use protected cells and an appropriate charger, do not charge unattended or on a flammable surface, and ensure any enclosure is adequately ventilated.
- You are responsible for complying with any law that applies to what you build, including electrical safety and radio equipment rules.
8. It is not monitoring, and it cannot get help
Nobody at Glucogaze watches your data. There is no monitoring service, no on-call clinician and no escalation path behind this project. Glucogaze cannot contact you, your carer, your clinic or the emergency services under any circumstances.
If you feel unwell, follow the plan agreed with your diabetes team. In an emergency call 999. For urgent advice that is not an emergency, call NHS 111 (or NHS 24 on 111 in Scotland).
9. Looking after someone else
If you use Glucogaze to follow another person’s glucose — a child, for example — everything above applies with equal force, and the responsibility for acting on that person’s care remains entirely with you and their clinical team. A remote display must never be the only thing standing between that person and a hypo.
Glucogaze is for personal and family use. It must not be used in a professional, clinical, care or institutional setting — a care home, school, nursery, clinic or workplace — as any part of looking after the people there. It has none of the validation, safeguards or support that such use would require.
10. Talk to a professional
Nothing on this site or on any Glucogaze screen is medical advice. If you have questions about your glucose levels, your diabetes management or your treatment plan, speak to your GP, your diabetes team or another suitably qualified healthcare professional. Never disregard professional advice, or delay seeking it, because of something Glucogaze displayed.
11. Accepting these disclaimers
By using Glucogaze — the website, the service or the firmware — you confirm that you have read and accepted this page, and that you understand and accept that:
- Glucogaze is for informational and convenience purposes only;
- data is sourced from third-party services outside our control;
- interruptions, delays and inaccuracies will occur;
- all medical decisions must be made using approved devices and in consultation with a qualified healthcare professional; and
